Big Fix Project Update: Opening of Southbound Lanes Pushed Back
Tuesday July 15, 2008
According to the California Department of Transportation, the third stage of the Big Fix will not begin as previously reported on July 15. Instead, the southbound lanes will reopen on Thursday, July 17 at 1 p.m.
The extremely hot weather in Sacramento last week caused work crews to shorten the time they could to pour the final driving surface - a polyester-based concrete - on the southbound lanes.
The third stage delay will cause the fourth stage to begin at a later date - Friday, July 18 at 8 p.m. In this final stage, the northbound lanes will be shut down until Monday, July 28 at 5 a.m.
Make sure to print out the new closure calendar (PDF) at the FixI-5.com Web site.

Stay Indoors as Poor Air Quality Continues
Thursday July 10, 2008
 |
| Concow Fires |
Just one look outside at the brown and smoky air makes you want to hold your breath.
The air quality throughout Sacramento metropolitan area has been poor from the multiple fires in Northern California. Yesterday's air quality index registered at a very unhealthy 182. Today's prediction of 174 is slightly better, but not much. By Friday, the index lowers a bit more to 159.
So normally summer in Sacramento means enjoying the sun with outdoor activities, but due to current conditions consider some of these ideas for indoor fun:
- Movie theaters. The new Eddie Murphy (who recently sold his Granite Bay home) movie, "Meet Dave," hits the big screen on Friday. Murphy leads a crew of miniature aliens who land on Earth in a human-like space ship.
- Museums. Museums are a great way to get some culture and get cool at the same time. The California Museum welcomes a new interactive exhibit on July 15 called Bringing the Condors Home where visitors can learn about the nearly extinct California Condor and how its population has rebounded.
- Casinos. Perhaps lady luck is your best bet to keep cool. There are several area casinos in the area ranging from card rooms to casino resorts. While you're there, don't forget check out the current casino event listings to take in some of the casino's entertainment which includes musical headliners and comedians.
- Eat in. Sometimes when the weather gets too hot, I am not looking forward to slaving over a hot stove. Instead, I will venture out to the local restaurants. For lunch, I'll hit my favorite dim sum joint for some hargow and sweet egg cream bun. My daughter will suggest getting a scoop of her favorite flavor at an ice cream parlor.
If you have any other suggestions, go to the Forum and add your ideas to the Spare The Air Indoor Activities thread.
