The Sacramento Old City Cemetery was established in 1845 through a land donation from city founder and cemetery resident John Sutter.
Along with Sutter, many other notable internments include E.B. Crocker (lawyer and art collector), Mark Hopkins (one of the "Big Four" railroad magnets), William Stephen Hamilton (son of U.S. Treasurer Alexander Hamilton) and other noted elected officials for the City of Sacramento and the State of California.
Those who died from the 1850 Cholera Epidemic that killed hundreds of early Sacramentans are buried here, as well as Donner Party survivors and thousands of immigrants who made Sacramento their home.
Below are some grave sites that are found along the self guided tour of the cemetery.
