Description:
Sutter’s Fort State Historical Park is an ideal place for families to learn about Sacramento’s early history. A self-guided audio tour is available as well as hands-on activities.
The fort is a reconstructed house museum of the first non-Indian settlement in the Central Valley.
Swiss immigrant John Sutter was given a land grant from Mexico which he used to establish New Helvetia or New Switzerland.
Photos, letters and maps depicting the early experiences of some of the first settlers of Sacramento are on hand. Including collections about the Donner Party and the Overland Trail.

Parking:
Sutter’s Fort is located near the busy Sutter General Hospital to the east and several popular eateries. It also sits among homes and apartments. Metered parking is available around the fort, but you may have to walk a couple blocks to find one.
Sutter’s Fort Trade Store:
The Trade Store sells a variety of gifts and printed material about California’s history including the Gold Rush and Overland Trail.
