The City of Sacramento appoints a City Council which establishes city policy, governs ordinances, approves the city’s budget, appoint key city positions, and hears appeals.
The City Council convenes for public meetings on most Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at City Hall’s City Council Chamber on the 2nd Floor. Some Thursday meetings are held, which are also open to the public. Meeting agendas are available online or can be retrieved at the City Clerk’s Office, which is located in Room 211 in City Hall.
The council consists of the mayor and eight elected councilmembers. Each member represents a district that contains approximately 51,000 residents. Each member can serve four-year terms with election dates occurring every two years. Councilmembers must live and be a registered voter in the districts they represent.
