History:

The California Museum For History, Women & The Arts showcases the achievements of Californians throughout history. First Lady Maria Shriver led the effort to re-establish the museum in 2005.

Formerly, the museum was opened in 1998 to house state archives.

Hours:

Museum Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. (Last admittance is 4:30 p.m.) Closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Museum Store Hours: Monday through Saturday: 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; Sunday: noon to 4:45 p.m.

Cost:

$7.50 adults, $6 seniors (65 and over), $5 youths (6-13), free for kids 5 and younger

Tours:

Self-directed tours Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Cost for tours: $5 for groups of 10 or more (must schedule 1 week in advance) and full price for drop-ins

Parking:

Free on weekends at lot on 10th and O streets. Street parking is free on Sunday. Other parking found at: 10th Street (between O and P streets and L and K streets), 11th Street (between O and P streets), and 14th and P streets. Metered street parking is in one-, two- and 10-hour parking increments.

Public Transportation:

Stop at Archives Plaza stop via Light Rail.

Dining:

The Gold Rush Grille, second floor, is open weekdays until 2:30 p.m. Other eateries are in walking distance.
