1. Rick’s Dessert Diner

Rick's Dessert Diner serves homemade recipes from grandma, but with a sophisticated flair. There are more than 285 items on the menu, including cakes, tortes, cheesecakes, pies, and pastries. Desserts are made fresh daily. Rick's Dessert Diner is great place to go when you yen for anything chocolate late at night. This Midtown diner closes at midnight from Tuesday through Thursday and 1 a.m. from Friday to Saturday.

2. Freeport Bakery

Popular cakes include the Shadow Fresa (fudge cake layered with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, with chocolate drizzling down the sides), the Lemon Cooler (layered buttermilk cake filled with lemon curd and frosted with Italian buttercream), and the Fresh Fruit Tart (fresh fruit topping a creamy vanilla custard with a flaky crust). The bakery also specializes in decorated and shaped cakes, wedding cakes, pastries, breads and muffins.

3. Ettore’s

Along the border of Arden and East Sacramento is Ettore's, a very popular European bakery. Chocoholics can get satisfied with the Truffle, a three-layer chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and topped with chocolate truffles. Among the bakery's popular cakes is the Fruit Basket (vanilla sponge cake, with alternating layers of strawberries, pineapples and white mousse, finished with a fresh fruit and whipped cream) and the Princess Cake (three-layer sponge cake filled with pastry cream and raspberry preserves and covered in marzipan).

4. Tower Cafe

Along with its eclectic decor, Tower Cafe serves an array of desserts. From its Chestnut Decadence Cake to Marble Tart (featuring Vahlrona's Manjari chocolate), there's always something delightful to eat. Of course there's always the Tower Cafe dessert classics, such as the Napoleon, where pastry cream and fresh fruit and sandwiched in between four layers of puff pastry, and the popular Black Bottom Cupcake, a simply delicious chocolate cupcake with a cream cheese and chocolate chip center.

5. Babycakes

Babycakes is a dessert destination newcomer, opening its bakery in East Sacramento in October 2007. They have an ever changing menu of flavors that not only change daily, but also seasonally. One day you may see the tempting S’mores cupcake, but the next day the Chai Tea cupcake will be beckoning from behind the case. There are daily flavors, such as the Triple Chocolate, Vanilla Vanilla and the Carrot Cake. And at around $2 to $2.50 per cupcake, you can indulge in more than one.
