I-5 Scheduled To Close for Repairs

The commute along I-5 is going to be a bit tougher come May 30th.

The $37 million repair to the Boat Section – about a one-mile stretch of I-5 between R Street to the Capitol Mall – is scheduled to commence on Friday, May 30 at 8 p.m.

BOAT SECTION INFO

The Boat Section resides under the Sacramento River waterline. Engineers in the 1960s and 1970s de-watered the area and added pumps, then Caltrans placed a seal slab that were fastened with 80-foot pins. This section is flanked by thick retaining walls and includes drainage channels.

Throughout the years, the drainage system began to have blockages causing water to push against the slabs and joints, resulting in cracks and allowing the surface to deteriorate. So now, the roadway needs to be repaired.

BOAT SECTION REPAIR INFO

The rehabilitation to the road would include installing a new drainage and monitoring system and a new roadbed. Closures to northbound and southbound I-5 should be approximately two weeks each. All lanes should be open to all traffic by July 4, but some repairs could continue through July 15.

COMMUTER INFO

The affected areas will run from Richards Boulevard to R Street and can affect the U.S. 50/Capitol City Freeway interchange. Access to Old Sacramento and the downtown area will remain open.

The Web site FixI-5.com provides up to date traffic information as well as e-mail alerts and live Web cams. Commuters can also call 511 for information in English and Spanish.

ALTERNATE ROUTES
